It's called a diner, but with its comfy booths and full bar (with stools) in the back, this place could pass for almost any conventional restaurant. Even the menu suggests something more elitist than just your local neighborhood eatery. How often do diners serve haricots verts, grilled salmon filets with herb butter, or Parisian carrots? The chef also dishes up a lovely rosemary roasted chicken with a darkly crisped skin and loads of herbed flavor, and the mashed potatoes dripping with gravy are probably better than anything Mom ever whipped up. Yet you'll find the casual stuff too, from burgers and hot dogs to meatloaf and macaroni and cheese, from hand-cut onion rings and meat chili to grilled cheese or BLT sandwiches. Since it's always open, breakfasts are big deals here, and are as eclectic as the rest of the menu, starring eggs plain or as omelets, jumbo pancakes, and Croque Monsieur or Croque Madame sandwiches, with ham, bechamel sauce, melted cheese -- and for the Madame version, a fried egg. If you've stopped by in the morning, you might just this once consider dessert for breakfast, for the kitchen has devised the sort of intensely rich and moist chocolate cake you wish you could make at home. It's a killer, but you really won't care, it's that good. Best news of all for families: Kids are welcome and the prices, modest.

Never been disappointed!

I'm SHOCKED at all the scathing reviews. I go there frequently and always, always love the food. I describe it to the unitiated as "like a gourmet version of a diner." I like that it's comfortable like the IHOP back in my small hometown, but the standard diner fare has some fun twists and the patrons are easy on the eyes. I do understand some people getting frustrated by the wait - I rarely go there on Sunday mornings. But how can the staff help that? All of the brunch places in Adams Morgan are madness on weekend mornings. They're a victim of their own success - it's not like The Diner can magically build an extra seating area somewhere; they're crammed into a popular street. The prices are good - you can fill your belly without straining your wallet - and the waitstaff have always been friendly to me. Even when something goes wrong (they're human and it's a busy place), they've been apologetic and if there's a reason for the screwup, they've explained it to me. I must confess that I recently became an even bigger fan of The Diner because I asked for a donation for a charity auction, and they gave a sizable gift certificate without hesitation. Plus I hear they use wind power, gotta appreciate that.

Good food, interesting crowd

I like the place - good burgers and breakfast whenever you want. It's wicked busy on the weekends, and during the week at breakfast you could have the place to yourself. The crowd is typical Adams Morgan, eclectic at times and always wonderfully varied. It's a diner, it's not Ruth's Chris, so you shouldn't expect it to be anything but decent food and a good break.
