Texans know a thing or two about good chili, and chefs at the South Austin Grill have learned the secrets. Their bowls of simmered, shredded beef with ground chiles (anchos and chipotles) are just short of heavenly. It's a rugged dish, with enough fire-breathing potential to stand your hair on end. Fortunately, it comes with four small, warm flour tortillas you can dunk or use for wrapping. The tortillas help tame the flames. Terrific chili is only one of many delights on this funky restaurant's menu: fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, carnitas and quesadillas are all good choices. Check the menu's new seasonal specialties section, too, where you might find lamb chops with pineapple-chipotle glaze. If you need to quench your thirst with all this hot, spicy food, select a cooling tequila drink-there are several interesting margaritas like the signature lime-strawberry one-or a chilled brew. This is the only location called South Austin Grill; others go just by Austin Grill.
