The purpose of a trip to Annie's is not to experience fine dining at its best, but rather to envelop yourself in the subtly Southern charms of old-school DC. In business for over fifty years, Annie's has been a gay institution since before such things even existed. Annie's menu is quite lengthy, including everything from breakfast fare to salads and soups to hearty entrees and rich desserts. (Ironically, the steaks are not among the top choices.) The staff, mostly cute heartbreakers and matronly sweethearts, always sport smiles and know their territory quite well. Unlike many gay hangouts, Annie's has a clientele that defies age and gender -- it even attracts a fair number of devoted straight customers. Many prefer to sit at the bar while waiting for a table, or even make that their sole destination. The restaurant is open late and is a popular destination for 17th Street revelers looking for a post-club bite. -- Dan Avery

Just order the steak
By nakitakels on 04/12/2007
Went on a Sunday night for dinner. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. They came in a mustard and cheese sauce. I guess it's an acquired taste!!! While the steak and baked potato were good the fish dinner was not. I ordered #1 off the menu fried shrimp, clams, and a crab cake. All of the fish tasted processed like what you would get from your supermarket in the frozen food section. Dessert also left much to be desired. The chocolate cake tasted like Betty Crocker with frosting.

YOUR FRIDAY HOST IS HORRID
By enjoyyourreview on 02/03/2007
I like the food at annies even though they have screwed up my omelette many times, they correct it quick and easily and the food is always hot. I basically go on the weekend nights. Last night it was the straw that broke the camels back, i just cant take the attitude from the host that works on friday nights late. he is the meanest person in the world. you walk in and he just stares at you like..'how dare you make me take my leg off the host stand and have to MOVE"" , It ruins the annies experience. this place used to be fun to go to on the weekends, now, i just go elsewhere. I hate bad service and this one starts at the door, how awful!!! Annie's I m begging you, put this man in the dishroom where he belongs! Please, hire a freindlier host! I've walked out twice. I m a great tipper and its the waitstaffs loss. As for the food, I basically just get an omellette and its ok. I wish they had more choices for cheese( feta and fake cheddar?hmm), I also dont like mashed potatoes with my eggs, so i get the steak fries. annies home fries are like mashed potatoes with chopped, uncooked onions. horrible. annies management, do yourself a favor and fire that rude man that works on friday nites! I challenge anyone to go there on Friday nites around 12:00am and notice this host, I can guarantee you won't be greated as you should. a lost customer here. I d rather eat a big mac on friday nites!
