With all the hundreds of places that claim to have the ''World's Greatest Burger,'' Matt's Bar is one of only a handful that might be right. Matt's has all the trappings of a great neighborhood bar: well-stocked jukebox, loyal local following, super-friendly staff and cold beer to wash it all down. What about those hamburgers? They're all delicious, but the real star is the Juicy Lucy -- a cheeseburger with the cheese actually sealed inside the meat. The cheese forms a (very hot) pool of tasty goo inside the burger as it cooks, and you'll do well to heed the posted warnings -- "Fear the Cheese!" -- and wait a few minutes to avoid a messy burn. Matt's serves a few hundred of these legends every week, which explains another posted witticism: ''No ice, no plates ... we blew the budget on napkins.'' The bar is beer only. -- Jon Hilgers

Matt's? You're kidding, right?
By Tanyalamo on 05/27/2008
I don't understand. I've lived in Mpls. all my life(39 years) and have eaten at Matt's at least 30+ times (including when I was a kid). I have to say as a self (and friend)-proclaimed food critic, that the Matt's Juicey Lucy is the most over-rated burger I've ever eaten. The cheese inside is stinky, artificial, american cheese that just tastes "wrong", (in my opinion, of course) and the beef patties are too thin. The Juicey Lucy ismade with two of those thin patties pressed together with a slice (or two?) of cheap, crappy cheese in the middle. Try it yourself and see what you think. A good burger is thicker and charred enough on the outside for great flavor yet pink enough that it isn't dry. For those who like their burgers well done, they can still be juicey even if they're not pink as long as they are taken off the grill at the right time. It seems to me that the people who rate Matt's burgers as "the best" have not eaten a hamburger anywhere else. The Wayzata Bar and Grill is one place, among many others, that comes to mind when I think of a good burger. Even Denny's makes a better burger than Matts. Not to belittle Denny's.- I've actually had a pretty good burger there!
