Rate and Write a Review The History When this landmark went dark on November 2, 2004, a collective wail went up from music fans and music makers around the Cities. But business smarts triumphed, and music history was preserved when new owners reopened the doors 2 1/2 weeks later. Before it was the foremost Twin Cities nightclub, First Ave. was the downtown Minneapolis bus depot. When it opened as a rock venue in 1970 (with Joe Cocker), it was dubbed, not surprisingly, The Depot. When disco entered the music scene the club was re-named Uncle Sam's, and then was shortened to Sam's. By 1981, First Avenue and its smaller room, the 7th St. Entry, were in their current form. The Scene Since its opening night, the hall has continually booked more top acts than any local venue. From Bo Diddley and Frank Zappa to The Ramones and U2, just about everyone has taken the stage. Unknowns have started here and gone on to prominence, and hopefuls still get a shot on Wednesday's New Band Night. The club features a huge mainroom with balcony seating and has been the backdrop for the Minnesota Music Awards and for Prince's film, 'Purple Rain.' In the VIP Room, dancers and DJs break out on weekends. With so many music genres offered, all ages and personalities show up -- some regulars have been going since the place opened. Without First Avenue, the Twin Cities music scene would be impressive, but it just wouldn't be the same.
