The Cat's Meow   

Don't let the bars on the window scare you off; this tavern on the southern edge of Soulard is one of the neighborhood's most inviting pubs. The Cat's Meow is one reason that some people compare the area to the French Quarter -- much like a Decatur Street dive where the regulars rule, the decor is quirky (cats and Mardi Gras memorabilia), the smoke flows thick and, given that they open at 7AM, cocktails are just fine for breakfast. There are a few TVs and a jukebox, but conversation will keep you company in this working-class joint, and since there is no kitchen and they're located a short walk from the brewery, beer serves as the bill of fare. Best of all, the booze is cheap, and if you're in a pinch and can't make it to the store, Cat's has a license to sell liquor to go.
