The Beiger Mansion Inn, a four-level neoclassical limestone edifice dating back to 1903, was once the home of the town's first self-made millionaire, whose wife wanted a house just like that of her friend in Newport, Rhode Island. Now a bed-and-breakfast on the National Register of Historic Places, it also has a restaurant that's open to the public. Decked out in rich-hued paneling, sturdy chairs to match and crisp white linen tablecloths, the restaurant serves both lunch and dinner. Lunch features cream of mushroom soup with hazelnuts, Napa Valley apricot chicken salad, a focaccia vegetable melt, assorted pastas, and hot entrees such as rosemary lamb chops or hickory-smoked salmon. At dinner, other entrees include gung bao shrimp and grilled pepper tenderloin. The inn is not far from the University of Notre Dame.
