You may spot a few celebs among the suits -- after all, Francis Ford Coppola, Robin Williams and Robert De Niro co-own the joint. But that's not the point at Rubicon: The real stars here are world-class sommelier Larry Stone, rising-star chef Stuart Brioza and dessert whiz Nicole Krasinki. Warm wood and glass by Jeff Chihuly give a mellow vibe to the two-level spot, but there's nothing laid-back about the offbeat, rewarding menu. "Crispy skatewing with turnips, cashews, soybeans and Gewurztraminer-ginger butter" sounds confused; on the plate, it sings. A deep smoked chicken broth is zinged by lemon-sage dumplings, while rose geranium creme caramel is united with its soul mate: a sunburst of apricots and Muscat de beaumes de venise. Don't bypass the wine. Proficient servers and the sommelier, can steer you through the staggeringly long (and multiple award-winning) list, or you can order wine pairings on one of three prix-fixe menus. The description of Burgundies reads like a textbook on the subject rather than a list of available bottles, while the "40 under $45" section is by no means an afterthought.

Rub-ya-noz-in-it
By danmcgrew123 on 04/12/2005
Despite the outrageously priced menu and wine list, for a special occasion, my lady and I decided to experience Rubicon, since it is about five doors from the office. Reservations well in advance, specifically for a quiet, out of the way table. Repeated (3)attempts to seat us as convenient for service, finally located as wished. After ordering, the before dinner wine arrived -- wrong wine, already opened. Required going to the hostess to get that squared away. Then wrong appetizers arrived. Another war. To Hell with it. Dropped a twenty on the table to cover the two glasses of wine and went next door to ZARE'S, where as usual, Food, service, wine and ambience were great -- at about 30% of Rub-ya-noz-in-it's rates. In five years of lunches and dinners at Zare's, have never had a glitch of any kind, except on my part. Oh yes, while Rubicon has valet parking, many of their clientele insist upon dumping their $200,000-plus vehicles where they please along Sacramento Street. Seems service and courtesy are reserved for the rich and famous, or high and mighty -- ordinary folks need not apply.
