In 1977, a little shop called Walnut Creek Wine and Cheese opened and drew a loyal, local following. A bistro was added and Contra Costans flocked in for great wines and Italian meals. Now called Prima, it employs award-winning chefs and a full time sommelier. The wine selection has grown so large that it has expanded into Prima Vini wine shop, which hosts tastings. Prima draws patrons from west of the Caldecott, San Francisco and even the Wine Country to indulge in its cuisine, often themed toward specific Italian regions like Sicily, Puglia and Lazio. Lunches and romantic dinners are served in the light-filled loggia, accented with red bougainvillea. The main dining room's creamy marbled walls and slate floor impart a Tuscan ambience. Toasty, caramel aromas drift out from the oak-burning oven. The contemporary Italian menu changes daily. One day you might find gnocchi with mussels and tagliatelle Verdi with a ragu of rabbit. Another day's favorite could be cannelloni stuffed with chard. Prima also employs a full-time pastry chef -- order the homemade biscotti and gelati. Everyone at Prima is just as knowledgeable about food and wine as they always have been -- and still just as friendly. -- Martha Levison

My boyfriend and I (both Black) have never experienced such unfriendly, unwelcoming service. I have no proof that we were discriminiated based on race. However, it was clear that the hostesses and managers were not happy to have us dine there. The food and service was not worth it. Don't waste your time or money.

Was great, now -"FancySizzler"

Prima was my favorite. I had been a loyal customer since 1990. But I will never return after I have seen how far the food and service has deteriorated in the last year. The wait staff lacked basic knowledge of how to serve patrons in a fine dinning establishment. They knew nothing about wine and offered no personality or charm. The dress code has become wear your blue jeans and sneekers because no one cares. The menu was void of creativity and offered nothing exotic or interesting, just your basic chicken, fish, pork chop or beef. When I asked why there was no lamb on the menu the waiter basically said it was a matter of economics. Apparently the economy had no conflict charging thirty eight dollars for a new york steak that had been mummified in sodium chloride to mask its poor qualities. That particular entrée was accompanied by a side of vegetables that closely resembled seaweed washed up on a beach in Pacifica. Listen to me, save yourself the money and go to sizzler or spend the money wisly and make your reservation somewhere else.
