Note: A fire in December 2006 has closed down the main lodge and restaurant until further notice. The cabins, annex and boat house are still open. Call for further details. This woodsy inn and restaurant has come a long way since its beginnings in 1917 as a sportsman's lodge. Today, Manka's is often frequented by celebrities and big-name chefs, but literally and figuratively it remains well off the beaten path. Manka's menu reflects the tastes of owner-manager Margaret Grade. Chef Daniel DeLong, formerly of Bix in San Francisco, helps realize Grade's ideas. Grade interprets the mantra "think globally, act locally" literally: All ingredients come from purveyors located within a half-hour drive from Manka's. The philosophy shows in the prix-fixe menu, served exclusively Thursdays through Sundays, which typically names the ingredients' providers. On one night a "cloud of Stella's pomegranates" may be served, along with "Annabelle's lamb's ear lettuce" with coastal Chioggia beets and fennel and "short ribs of Bill's natural beef." Menu items change almost daily based on supply and the season, but regardless, Manka's shares its growing fame with neighbors. The dining room softens dark, weathered-wood walls with white linen and mica lamps. But the feel is rustic: Honed wood chairs, custom-forged iron chandelier and ivy creeping in from the casement windows remind you that you're deep in the woods, where adventure lurks. -- J.M. Brown

Manka's: Overpriced/rude
By janglestravel on 09/25/2006
The food was fine. None of our group were overwhelmed, the vegetarian was distinctly underwhelmed. Service was indifferent (chasing down water or refills on wine), and became actually rude after I suggested we were hoping to be able to finish relatively speedily--this was after 2-1/2 hours, when we still had two courses still to go. We finally got our final course after 3-1/2 hours. The atmosphere was attractive but precious and pretentious--which the staff cater to. We love Pt Reyes, but we wouldn't be going back even if it were reasonably priced, which it isn't.

SF's Best
By mgaines17 on 09/15/2006
Not long ago some friends came in from out of town, including one who wrote about food for the Boston Globe and several other East Coast publications. They were playing big spenders, so we ended up at Gary Danko's, Chez Panisse and Manka's in one incredible week (try getting those reservations. just try). And all four of us agreed that Manka's was the best, and not by a little. If the details of this cancellation policy are true, that would bug the hell outta me, too. I don't blame the guy a bit. But for freshness, for creativity, for unreal atmosphere and for simply wonderful tastes, I just don't think any restaurants I've been to in the Bay Area can touch it.

Poor customer service
By srw1954 on 11/26/2005
A week before my 50th birthday a year and a half ago I made reservations for two for dinner there. They asked for a credit card to hold the reservation. They didn't tell me that if you cancel less than 72 hours in advance you get no refund. Well, 48 hours before our scheduled dinner, we had to cancel for important personal reasons, but they said they would charge my card $114. I asked why, what for? They insisted they had told me about their cancellation policy, but we were not told. We complained to our credit card company, but to no avail as I guess the restaurant wins when its their word against ours. I will never eat there because of this poor service and them not giving us the benefit of the doubt. We figured 48 hours was plenty of time for cancellation. It was one lousy 50th birthday I must admit.

Fantastic

We have planned many trips to the Pt. Reyes area and have never been disappointed. Dinner is divine and we have always been taken care of at Mankas. The meals are exciting as the menu is always filled with new and exciting treats.
