It's Tops is a San Francisco relic. Since 1935, this coffee shop has held its ground inside a cute white, yellow and blue house, complete with shutters, on a nondescript corner of Market Street. The blue marquee and old Coca-Cola sign are originals. Each table is equipped with an ancient jukebox and the wood-paneled walls are lined with San Francisco memorabilia and newspaper clippings. Slide into a booth or sit at the counter for a true diner experience. The menu at It's Tops reads like a who's who of diner fare: home fries, hotcakes, omelets, waffles, tuna and turkey melts, burgers and ice-cream shakes and floats. Lest you think your food options are bland renditions of the above, try the Satan's Spicy Spuds or the California Pig (a big burger with bacon, cheese, grilled onions and avocado). If you're super-hungry and willing to take a chance, try the beef liver, bacon and onion dinner, served with potatoes, buttered veggies and salad. Order French fries off the menu and you'll need to point to a blurb that reads, ''fresh-cut, greasy French fries.'' Open until 3AM most days, this place attracts some late-night characters (worth the visit alone). Service is temperamental but fast. For filling, down-home grub at reasonable prices most any time of the day or night, It's Tops is tops.
