Abed Amas opened Fattoush in 1998, and the name is the same as the meal: grilled eggplant mixed with tomatoes, mint, cucumber, Italian parsley and green onion, sprinkled with sumac and tossed in a special lemon vinaigrette. It's traditionally the first thing eaten after the yearly Ramadan fast. The chef is Manal Al-Shafi, formerly of YaYa's; and here she does feast foods from Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Morocco. One intriguing dish is the Palestinian mansaf, a nomadic creation of lamb cooked in aged yogurt with rice, roasted almonds and pine nuts. Add $12 to any entre price and the "royal'' feast, with many more side dishes plus dessert and mint tea, is yours.

First of all, the food is outstanding. A wonderful selection of finely chosen and expertly prepared Middle Eastern dishes. Brunches are nice too, but that menu tends to be more Americanized. Brunch in the back patio is very cozy, and the interior dining area is warm and visually appealing. The owner is very gracious host.
