With reasonable prices for generous portions, Eric's would probably have a following even if the restaurant served generic Chinese food. Instead, Eric's sparks up ordinary dishes with interesting ingredients, making this small storefront dining room one of the busiest in Noe Valley. Many of the dishes are Hunan in origin -- which often means spicy -- so order with a bit of caution. The kitchen will respond to requests for less heat. Try the Hunan lamb; spring leg of lamb with leek, red peppers and garlic; spicy smoked pork; Hunan smoked pork with baby garlic root and leek sauteed in a soy-based sauce, or the extremely popular mango prawns, beef or chicken. Eric's serves tamer dishes, too, but they aren't what people line up for. Takeout is a great option here. Reservations are not -- they aren't accepted. -- Scott Sax
