Cafe Ethiopia doesn't promise much with its modest coffee shop decor, but it's a welcome addition to the Mission. Eighteen dishes run the gamut from the hearty kitfo, a buttery Ethiopian steak tartare, to the delicate alecha ater, a rich puree of yellow split peas. Diners use chunks of injera, a spongy fermented crepe, to scoop up the flavorful food.

My ideal restaurant

Large dining area with much generous space between tables, no bumping or weaving around to avoid collision with fellow diners. Heavy wood chairs with glass top tables. UNintrusive service. You order, they bring it and thats it. No "Hi, I'm Brian and I'll be in your face all night sucking up for a big tip" They bring your order in serving dishes then place it all on one giant round platter in the center of the table. You eat by tearing off a piece of thier bread which is like stretchy crepes and scooping the food up with your fingers. There are NO utensils. The food is very tasty, spicy and hot or mild depending on how you order. Beef, chicken, lamb with vegetables and sauce and then mushy concoctions with pea or lentil base sort of Indian like. Its all very good. I will definately be back. Nothing gets 5 stars from me, there is no such thing as excellent.

A great place to get some vegetarian food - can be ordered spicy. The vegetarian plate is a good way to try a few different dishes. The food is excellent!
