If you work somewhere near Bush and Montgomery in downtown San Francisco, you can't help but know Bistro Burger. The aroma wafting out from the kitchen starts tantalizing you around 11:30 every morning, ruining any pretense of focus at that pre-lunch meeting. As you'd expect from a downtown spot, the decor is clean but forgettable and service is assembly-line efficient. But who cares? The burgers are heaven. Niman Ranch beef is topped with a panoply of inventive combos, from simple cheddar to bacon and gorgonzola. Veggie burgers are given separate thought, as are grilled chicken creations (try the prosciutto and gruyere). The Cobb salad should be on butter lettuce rather than spring mix, but aside from that quibble it's divine. Give the kitchen credit for the invention of the perfect side order. Frings, half crisp fries and half well-battered onion rings, come in small and large. It's more than the nearby fast-food joints, but well worth it.
