When you walk into Barney's, your inner child is bound to smile. Here you have permission to indulge in spicy curly fries, a cheeseburger, onion rings and a chocolate milkshake -- and still feel civilized. Barney's is a far cry from other chain burger joints. Each of the six Barney's locations (four in the East Bay and two in San Francisco) is clean, pleasant and inviting, with outdoor and indoor patios and nice design touches. Burger fans will of course be pleased with menu choices such as the Popeye Burger (with spinach and feta), the California Burger (cheese, bacon, chilies and sour cream) and the French Burger (with blue cheese and bacon on a baguette). As an alternative to the extensive beef menu -- with 22 burger choices and counting -- non-red meat eaters can order the same trimmings on burgers made with chicken, turkey or tofu. Just remember to go for half-orders of greasy items -- unless you have an iron stomach or are sharing with more than two people.
