Rate and Write a Review Chef Arnold Wong and wine director Debbie Zachareas rose from humble (gourmet mainstay Ashbury Market) to modest (fusion pioneer Eos) to what some would consider grandiose -- the three-floor Bacar. The huge bricked and skylit warehouse ranges from quiet views on the mezzanine to rowdy near the front door to comfy booths near the kitchen; a great wine cellar/private party space is downstairs. Wine trumps food here -- and it's obvious why. Lots of places have good bottles, but Bacar has revolutionized the concept, with 200 different wines available as two-ounce tastings, five-ounce glasses or 250- and 500-milliliter decanters. Finally, freedom from ordering by the bottle! The immensely flexible list is also interesting, heavy on rare and cult productions. But the food is stellar. Chef Wong jettisoned his Asian-fusion offerings (exceptions: garlicky wok-tossed mussels or lobster) in favor of inventive seasonal American. Locally grown lettuce is tossed with a honeyed Point Reyes blue cheese dressing; salt cod brandade lightens up with potatoes and crab; juicy duck tops slightly sweet chestnut spaetzle. It's hardly cheap, but very good, and the friendly staff is sympathetic if you drop in for a glass and a bite.
