Ask about the decor of 1550 Hyde and you'll get stories worthy of a TV decorating show: The old red Italian marble bar was scavenged from a downtown firm; the Eames-like chairs came from a European school via eBay; the manager dropped 15 pounds painting the place; in the process he found a bar napkin hinting at a previous incarnation as "Pat Patterson's Cavalcade." The storytelling vibe comes through in the monthly wine flight, whimsically and well-chosen. The brief menu changes based on what's in season, but fans of the much-missed Universal Cafe will be pleased to see some staples popping up on chef Peter Erickson's menu, like perfectly cooked roasted chicken and a crumbly-crusted, just-sweet-enough maple syrup tart with creme fraiche. Entrees are stronger than starters; stick to simpler offerings -- lettuce dressed with Banyuls vinaigrette, sauteed chicken livers, daily soup -- to begin with. Also to avoid are pastas, not the kitchen's strong point. But lovely meat and fish dishes and delicious desserts (all cooked by Erickson, believe it or not) and charming, though slightly rushed, service mean you won't notice the slight culinary bobbles. -- Julie Ross

Careful of the Coffee!!!!
By hbike on 12/25/2004
Its Christmas morning and all thru my house not a creature is stirring. Except for me. I had a very impressive meal at 1550 last evening. The soup was wonderful, the entree (a delicious chicken-although a bit salty) was very tasty. And after that a delicious dessert. Unfortunately the Afagionato came with regular espresso instead of decaf.. I had been assured that it was decaf. espresso. I like many people am sensitive to caffiene. I can drink it in the a.m. and do really enjoy it. But drinking it at 10:00 p.m. is something I avoid. It not only keeps me up but causes undo anxiety. I am now debating wether or not to cancel a party I am giving for 12 people this afternoon because I did not sleep all night?? While the food was great. The service was friendly but uneven and a bit slow. Given it was Xmas eve. it could be forgiven (short staffed-people off and the like). But not knowing wether coffee has caffiene or not, given the consequences is another matter. If you go enjoy. I am sure you will. But bring your own decaf.!!!!
