Be warned: You'll be tempted to share a meal or order the sometimes-available half-portion, but don't: You'll deny yourself the pleasure of the leftovers later. Trattoria Acqua has quietly become the most beloved restaurant (with the possible exception of George's at the Cove) in La Jolla, presenting fine and unpretentious Italian fare in easily the most charming restaurant atmosphere in San Diego. Sweet stucco rooms with tiled floors, light washed wood, striped fabrics and trompe l'oeil murals open onto a central courtyard, while a sheltering gazebo adds to the alfresco experience. The menu is as lighthearted as the Insalata Acqua with baby greens and goat cheese or as serious as the Filetto di Bue, oven-roasted prime filet mignon wrapped in bacon with gorgonzola cheese, spinach and whipped potatoes. Pizzas are a favorite and can be ordered with an herbed whole-wheat crust that's so suggestive of the Italian countryside that it makes you want to toss off your shoes and run barefoot through an olive grove. An expansive wine list completes the experience. Don't be intimidated by the La Jolla zipcode. Acqua is as relaxed and as friendly as can be. Kids are welcomed enthusiastically, and groups of friends linger for hours over coffee and dessert.

HORRIBLE....DO NOT EAT HERE!
By mishee9 on 12/14/2007
The previous reviews must have been written a very long time ago. We dined for lunch here during the week and ordered a mussels appetizer. It was to be my birthday lunch and I had never been to this establishment before. On our second shell, my friend and I noticed the mussels were bad: mushy texture and foul smell. We notified our waiter, and he promptly removed the dish. About 20-30 minutes later, we got our main entree, which was mediocre at best. Neither of us complained, we don't usually send food back. Upon receiving the check, the mussels were not removed from the bill. We inquired, the 1st owner (who greeted us warmly AND sent over an amuse bouche!) came over and informed us that my companion had sent food back too many times and was flagged (she sent back food a total of 3 times, inc. today, over the past 2 years). She refused to take it off the bill, whereupon the 2nd owner came over and told us he would remove the charge and would, and I QUOTE, "appreciate it if we never came back again". We were absolutely mortified, the 2 other tables in the restaurant (it was empty otherwise) next to us, heard the whole transaction. Needless to say, these people need a lesson in customer service. We were not rude, innapproriate, or disrespectful, we were given a bad, potentially poisonous dish, and wanted it off the bill. That's all. I have never, in all my life, been treated like such garbage. So, with the plethora of fabulous restaurants in La Jolla and the San Diego area, please, find somewhere else to dine.

The best everything

I absolutely love this restaurant! Their food, the view (be sure to make reservations and ask for specific seating), and atmosphere is just perfect. Ive lived in San Diego 5-years now and this restaurant is still #1 to me. Even if you don't agree that this is the best italian/medi. restaurant in town, I do believe you wont be disappointed.

This place was fabulous!! The service was great, and very friendly. Our waiter was helpful and down to earth. The lobster ravioli was out of this world. I have been craving it, which is a problem because we live in Utah. We will eat here again the next time we visit San Diego. Delicious!!
