Rate and Write a Review Regional cuisine from China varies from the spicy heat of Szechwan to the more refined delicacy of Cantonese. Somewhere in the middle lies the "people's" food of Hong Kong. Roughly the Chinese equivalent of soul food, the flavors and textures are robust and comforting. Dumplings, pot stickers and noodles are the cornerstone of the menu. Inexpensive to begin with, the restaurant is made even more frugal friendly with family-style soups and entrees. Share the fragrant homemade beef noodle soup or an ample serving of pan-fried noodles. Teeny tiny and tucked into the Convoy Street Asian restaurant row -- the closest thing San Diego has to a Chinatown -- the atmosphere at Dumpling Inn is utilitarian with Formica-topped tables and durable plasticware. Casual but cool in its authenticity, you get the impression that when Chinese San Diegans want great Hong Kong food, they come to the Dumpling Inn. This is a long way from mainstream-friendly Panda Express, so don't be afraid to ask for recommendations or explanations about the menu. Western folk sometimes mistake the Eastern respect for personal privacy with a lack of interest. Just ask, and you'll get all the help you need. Note that this is a cash-only establishment. -- Lisa Galloway
