Terryl Gavre's labor of love takes the shape of a cozy neighborhood breakfast nook she calls Cafe 222. Every morning, you'll see business suits, jogging suits, and whatever suits everyone else's style packing the small tables, reading the paper, sipping steaming mugs and munching on some very inventive breakfast goodies. The owner/chef's view of breakfast and lunch cuisine is slightly askew from the average bacon and eggs diner. Her imagination wins awards and many repeat customers with peanut butter and banana-stuffed French toast, "The Famous Pumpkin Waffle" (really is famous), orange-pecan pancakes and lunch ingredients like curry-mayo and homemade veggie burgers. There's limited space indoors, but tables set up along the sidewalk are most patrons' preferred seating anyway, and canine guests can accompany their people out there. With all the apartment buildings on downtown's west end, Cafe 222 long ago locked in a prime locale to cater to urban dwellers who prefer a certain panache in their morning comfort food. With Gavre's personal touch of funk and gourmet innovation, her place is a must-stop for the early meal.

Great Food!
By mrbacala74 on 02/22/2006
I love breakfast and it's so great to find a place like this so I don't have to look for the awful alternative....IHOP, Denny's whatever. I waited a while but I think it was worth it. The coffee was good, service with a smile from Shauna(?) and food was awesome. When I'm downtown I'll be there for sure.

Should be one in every town
By alicehaster on 02/05/2006
It always feels great to find those little out of the way places where you feel the heart and soul of the owner in every artful detail. At 222 the the food is always fresh and has that completely home made feel and the aptmosphere is always lively. I love the Joe's special and the oversized muffins. This is the exceptional kind of place that can turn a urban commercial block into a warm and welcoming neighborhood meeting place. In fact, I think building a 222 style cafe in every neighborhood could significantly enhance quality of living!

Awful service
By peeeeebee on 06/15/2004
The food was just OK - not amazing, but anywhere that serves breakfast all day gets an extra star as far as I'm concerned. The service was pretty poor - as graceless and off-hand as anything I've ever experienced. From reading about the owner (who was not present on the 2 occasions I ate there) I think she would be shocked at how disinterested her staff is.

We spent the weekend at the Horton Grand and found this little place just a block away. The food was awesome!
