Ashoka the Great allows the aromas coming from the kitchen to announce the restaurant's credentials; redolent of curries and roasting meats, the smells that waft through the dining room are an olfactory trip deep into the heart of India. Authentic dishes like chicken vindaloo and tikka, tandoori chicken and vegetable masalas fill the buffet table -- available for both lunch and dinner, this budget-friendly dining option is popular with patrons. A la carte entrees and multi-course "feasts" are also offered. No pork or beef is served here, in keeping with Indian tradition. There are numerous vegetarian choices, making Ashoka a favorite stop for local vegans. Ashoka the Great sits in a tidy strip mall, sharing space with several other Indian businesses (including the very handy Indian market) and a small Hindu temple. Named for a devoutly Buddhist legendary Indian ruler, the restaurant is a center for local Indian culture. -- Lisa Galloway

As a English chap , who's father was born in Bombay I grew up on Indian food . I have always loved great Indian cuisine and Ashoka certainly delivers the real thing. I would highly recommend it to any visiting Brit or American wishing to taste the best the east has to offer.

The food was awesome, full of flavor. We ordered an assortment of foods and everything was tasty. Service was slow though, but nice enough to make a 5 star rating. Lots of leftovers too.

The best food in town. Coming from New York (Jackson Heights aka Jai Kishan Heights) I didn't think I would get yummy food over in SD.. Oh Boy was I in for a surprise or what? Hands down the best place to get Desi Food. Reasonably priced & excellent service.
