Although catering is the backbone of their business, the folks at The Kitchen offer something you're unlikely to find anywhere else: three nights a week, the restaurant/catering business is transformed into a veritable cooking show as 46 people sit down to watch them prepare an elegant, prix fixe five-course meal. Half of the guests (who each pay $75 for the privilege of this unique dining experience) sit at the marble horseshoe-shaped bar, while the rest of them sit at tables in full view of chef Randall Selland as he prepares scrumptious French cuisine with a California twist. The warm industrial dining room, with its stainless steel doors and artistically designed details, offers a sumptuous room in which to dine. Selland's son Josh is the restaurant manager and wine buyer, while Selland's wife Nancy Zimmer takes care of all the catering. In keeping with the family-oriented theme, there are cousins prepping in the kitchen and aunts doing the bookkeeping. But bear in mind that you don't need to go to The Kitchen to savor its tastes: The Kitchen can cater anything, from a sit-down dinner for 10 to a big bash with 400 guests.

There is a Heaven. This is it!

The reservations are few and hard to get. Do not let that deter you. I have been a "Regular" here since it was on Marconi Ave. I go as often as my pocket book can stand. The staff is always efficient courtiousand helpful. The food is ALWAYS out of this world. The menue is never the same, as The kichen uses only the best and freshest ingredients for their fare. This means the menue varies according to season, what is available, and the cooks whim. It is prepared with extra ordinary care and Vim as this is the show. You will NEVER be dissapointed or dissatisfied here. Have been to many fine resturants all over the world but none finer than here! ave

A Surprise in The Kitchen
By wdgibbsii on 06/20/2002
Not being from Sacramento, and not having heard anything about The Kitchen, I did not know what to expect. The first thing I noticed was I noticed was a room full of people drinking wine and having a good time. Being involved in a winery (Rosenblum Cellars in Alameda), I was impressed by the wine list and the cellar. The selection and prices were sufficent for any taste or pocketbook. The Chef/Owner and star of the show gaveled the meeting to order and proceeded welcome one and all and invite them to wander around, look, ask questions, and help, if you were so inclined. The Chef puts on a culinary performance that is worth the trip to Sacramento, although you may have to wait months for your visit. The food is better than the performance, which is the real test. We started with fresh Maine lobster ravioli and we know it was fresh as The Chef had a couple big ones in hand as he was telling us about the menu. There was a salad course with fresh baby greens that he had picked that morning, with fresh bay shrimp. There was fresh fish that swam by the windows just before being offered to the diners. The Niman beef was primo. The Sushi, and soft shell crabs were a delightful palette cleanser. The deserts were a nice finish to a repast that took about 3.5 hours to complete. The interesting touch is that you are invited to have as many helpings of an item as you want. You will not go away hungry. The wait staff is very professional and "the wine guy" is helpful in assisting in the selections of their wines. It "ain't cheap", but it is worth every sous. The interior abmiance is high tech, but as the Kitchen is the theatre one is not put off by it. IF you are interested in watching a Corps de food ballet, this is the place. The entertainment is the food and its creators. A first class meal was enjoyed by one and all.
