No matter what time or day you drop by the Old Tavern Bar and Grill in Sacramento, there's bound to be a good vibe. Even on a weekday afternoon, the pumping music and lively crowd brightens up this well-known historic bar. The building first debuted in 1914 as a cleaning and dyeing shop, and in 1973 opened its doors as the Old Tavern. Festooned in decorative lights and alcohol bottles of all types, the bar features a neighborhood-party kind of atmosphere. Serious drinkers will be impressed with the selection of liquor available, including 8 Irish whiskies, 20 draft beers and 36 varieties vodkas. For added fun, you can enhance your hand-eye coordination with a game of darts, pool, pinball or shuffleboard. The Old Tavern is known for its early happy hour running from 6 AM to 12 noon seven days a week. The owner describes the crowd as "soup to nuts," with everything from senior visitors to young hipsters and everyone in between. The fun, laid-back crowd welcomes all kinds of people, whether dressed in suits or shorts. -- l.l. wirth

Hell, I've spent enough money at the O.T. over the years to put all of owner Bill Hamilton's step-kids through Harvard or mayve ITT Tech. The thing I liked best about the O.T. was drinking two-fers in the quiet company of other serious alchoholics before noon, or until the peace was disturbed by any stray female who blundered in at that hour, and who inevitably played that damned jukebox. I stayed away from the place at night. Too many amatuer drunks puking in the parking lot after dark, and I was, after all, a professional.
