Since opening in 1997 in this memorable location, Alley Katz has been the forum for an array of music types, from rock, blues, jazz and punk to hip-hop, rap and techno music. Crowds line up to be a part of the action nearly every night here -- it's one of the only live- music venues in town, and caters to a diverse community of music lovers. Clientele is as diverse as the acts on stage. College students can be seen playing pool upstairs or munching a slice of pizza from the pizza bar at the club's entryway. Black leather is a frequent sight, as are dreadlocks. Tattoos and body piercings abound -- depending on who you come to see. The spacious, darkened music hall caters to expressive dress. Don't expect to find street parking, but there is public parking close by. This is the live music lover's dream in Shockhoe Bottom, no matter what kind of music you love.
