Founded in 1938, Jack's is a local institution in Redding, and it sure feels old school when you step from the bright street into what may be the darkest restaurant you'll ever eat in -- it's so dark that a flashlight accompanies your bill. The nearly Depression-era prices ($16.40 for a choice 16-ounce New York plus salad, potato and garlic bread) are a pleasure matched only by food that's not self-consciously retro but just the way it's always been; the cocktails are strong, the blue cheese dressing is creamy and the steaks are thick and juicy. If you're making your way along I-5 and want a side trip to the past, Jack's is well worth a stop. But be warned: Jack's starts serving dinner at 5PM, and most nights every booth is full by 5:05. -- Kate Washington of 'Sunset Magazine.'

Local Yocal Review

Been to Jack's a number of times. Usually when out of town guests want to go there. Hole-in-the-wall slum joint. Crowded with Reddingite yuppie types, a few red-necks and even a few gay peeps!! Everyone is welcome. Great bartender knows how to make a drink. Great service, lots of food and usually crowded. In my opinion (and we all know about opinions...) the steaks are fair. Just a dark, dank old cafe with a bunch of mismatched tables and chairs. A great place to go if you like lots of activity around you and you are ready to party!! I've seen everything from sweats to tuxedo's there.

Simply the best steak anywhere
By agsthewind on 08/30/2007
If you're looking for a good steak this is the place. None better. Simple meal: salad, baked potatoe, garlic bread, and steak. It's a sure thing, there is no risk of getting anything less than a very good meal.

The best in the west!
By dennka on 04/14/2007
Have eaten at many west coast steak houses, from San Diego to Seattle, I must say Jacks is among the very best. The atmosphere is old town and everyone appears to be having a good time. Lots of nice folks to chat with while waiting for a table, and Mike the bartender is a legend for his unbelivable memory aand speed of service. This place is well worth the time to visit, but do yourself a favor.....order a steak.

if you like a steak cooked rare, this is the place. all you who like steak well done, please, you really don't like steak. best made well drinks in redding. no other steak house in redding compares to jacks. outback ? they only give you a martini half full, and charge you more. and im sorry, there steaks are not that good.
