Despite its plain exterior and unimpressive facade, Meritage is a delight to the senses once you step inside. There's eye candy everywhere you look. The bar is long and modern, with a waterfall fountain and tiny lamps hanging from the ceiling. The dining room features a stone fireplace and a row of windows that look out into a cozy garden with bright flowers and stone sculptures. Dim lighting throughout adds a romantic touch. The menu is contemporary, with flavors from around the world. You'll find everything from chicken teriyaki to clams Portuguese to Yucatan scrod to blackened catfish. You'll also find simple steak and ''smashed'' potatoes, capellini aglio e olio (angel hair pasta with garlic and olive oil) and several types of wood-grilled pizza. One of those pizzas is offered for dessert: pizza melba, which is topped with mascarpone and cream cheeses, bananas, blueberries and raspberry sauce. Other more traditional desserts include tiramisu and grilled banana split. Prices are moderate, with most entrees $10-$15. Be forewarned: Bread is only served upon request. Ask and ye shall receive.
