When Guy Peluso took over the Scoops Plus ice cream shop, a longtime neighborhood staple in Bloomfield, he knew that his new Italian bistro would have to be something special. The result, Grasso Roberto, is an eclectic little sandwich shop where old men sip cappuccino and college students buy fresh panini sandwiches. Featuring traditional fare such as biscotti and bagels, Grasso Roberto is also home of the much-coveted Genovese sandwich, a delectable combination of smoked turkey, pesto mayonnaise, baby greens and tomato. The bistro has preserved its ice-cream parlor roots, serving 15 to 20 flavors of sugary gelato; it's not uncommon, when settling with a scoop, to hear old-timers reminiscing about the Old Country. Professionals will find convenient Internet ports available at each table, and the coffee selection is sprawling: lattes, cafe mocha, cappuccino dopio and warm chai. One of Bloomfield's most intrepid businesses, Grasso Roberto is a tradition in the making.

Great Brunch
By alfredoboutros on 02/10/2005
I have been to many brunches in Pittsburgh, and I can say that this is the best brunch in the Burgh. For $10 you get awesome food, coffee, juice, smoked salmon, etc. Plus you are treated like one of the family. No where else in Pittsburgh can you find this. It is definitely one of my favorite places to go on a Saturday afternoon!

I went to Grasso Roberto after passing it repeatedly on the way to the Strip. It's easy to get intimidated by the familiarity everyone has; I wasn't helped too much, and felt awkward figuring out where to sit/pay/who to direct questions to.

Still, the food (particularly the Saturday brunch) is good and well-priced, and the coffee is amazing. I think you're more likely to have a good experience if you're open to being social. I've seen people introduce themselves to Guy and launch into long, interesting conversations.
