Whether or not you're headed to the theater, this Cultural District spot is sure to bring down the house. The specialty here is Portuguese cuisine, which fuses the flavors of India, Brazil and Africa with unique sauces and blends. Consider kicking off your meal with caldo verde, a potato-and-kale soup served vegetarian-style or with sausage, then segue to Cafe Zao's sweet paquillo peppers stuffed with fresh goat cheese and apple. A mild curry sauce flavors the shellfish goa, with brings together clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp and crayfish, while serra cheese adds flavor to filet mignon. Here, the atmosphere is as cultured as the cuisine, with abstract art by Squirrel Hill's Robert Robinson and curtains made with fabric imported from China. A smaller dining room, lined with symbols of the Chinese zodiac, would make a perfect spot for a birthday party.

Prix fixe worth every penny!
By estefiem on 08/28/2007
My fiance and I had the daily menu of the Prix Fixe promotion this past Friday. Among the very tasty courses, we had cucumber soup (great refreshment with a ting for my tongue), fig with blue cheese (delicious and fun fusion of flavors), lobster cake (the best dish of the day and the best lobster dish I've ever had), and a dulce de leche creppe that even my fiance (not a creppe enthusiast) could not resist. After reading mixed reviews, I was quite skeptical. Nonetheless, I ended up being delightfully surprised and very satisfied. So, I give Cafe Zao a full row of stars!

My favorite

We have been to Cafe Zao many times now and in our opinion it's the best in the city. The food is excellent. Never over seasoned and never too bland. Service has always been wonderful. Any time there has been the slightest mistake the waiters and managers go out of their way to make up for it. And for those of you who hate paying for parking downtown they now validate your parking at night. Could use some better wines, but other than that it's perfect.

Very chic. Service was excellent. Entrees were mediocre at best.
