When it's past midnight and hunger pangs remain wide awake, you're no longer up the creek. Just head for Nick's, the Valley's first all-purpose, munchie-friendly sit-down restaurant that never closes. That means 24/7, no exceptions. Walk in at a normal time, when other restaurants are open, and Nick's is empty. But the rest of the night the family-run place is crowded, noisy and jumping with excitement. Late night on a weekend, many folks are still a bit inebriated and in a partying mood; that's when you have to order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. The food is generally given surprisingly high marks, although it sometimes suffers at the height of the late-night rush-hour. Prices are also good, like a huge sub with four meatballs and dripping with melted cheese for about $6. Or a $10 12-inch pizza with three toppings, also available by the slice; choose from a wide variety of interesting toppings. Sweets are plentiful, too, including a dessert pizza. It's a tasty, 12-inch job with your choice of sweet fruit toppings, plus frosting, on a hot pizza crust.
