There are Mexican joints aplenty in South Philadelphia, but the majority are tiny taquerias without a liquor license. If you want a beer with your burrito or a margarita with your mole, you're out of luck, unless you head over to Cantina Los Caballitos, a laidback new resto-bar from the owners of Royal Tavern in Bella Vista. They've moved a little deeper south with this venture, both literally and figuratively. The location is in the heart of South Philly, but the food and drink is from south of the border. Expect to see your basic burritos, quesadillas and empanadas, along with slightly fancier fare like a pan-fried skirt steak and a snapper filet grilled inside of a banana leaf. There are plenty of drinks to go along with the grub: margaritas made with fresh-squeezed blood oranges or guava, a lengthy list of sipping tequilas and fun specialty cocktails like the agua colada, prepared with coconut rum and tamarind. The wood-paneled walls, dim lighting and glow of candles made it feel like an authentic cantina.

Great food, large portions
By leathersdonna on 02/09/2008
The food is wonderful and the portions are very generous. While the margaritas are the best in the area, they are not a good value as they are heaped with ice. Still with the beer.

Good selection of vegetarian eats. Awsome half-price happy hour. Really nice staff. A total neighborhood gem.

Great drinks, staff and eats
By hanssonne on 08/27/2007
Really great place with a fun and friendly staff that is well versed with the food and drinks. For those that love a great Margarita to go along with good food and an atmosphere at a refreshingly reasonable price. Anyone who thought that Copa was great "back in the day" should try this place. The Margaritas are even better without the compromise of bad food, bad service and shady clientele.
