With so many restaurants on Downtown Long Beach's Pine Avenue, it would be easy to overlook this tiny Greek cafe and deli, but doing so would be a big mistake. The father and son team of George and Demitri Loizides not only own George's Greek Deli but also preside over the kitchen, where they masterfully prepare authentic dishes such as Souvlakia (kabob style lamb) and Tiropeta (three types of cheese and seasonings wrapped in filo.) The casual and inviting ambiance, as well as the amicable waiters, make you feel like a part of the family. -- Casey Sumaylo

Mediocrity at it's finest

My associates and I came here for lunch one afternoon at the advice of a client of ours who works for the city of Long Beach. There were 3 of us and we arrived just after 12:30 on a weekday afternoon. The first thing we noted was the elderly gentlemen standing beneath the arbor of the entrance. You couldn't miss him as you simply couldn't get in without passing him. He was greeting the guests as they arrived and hugging the women who were within his grasp. Had I been a woman, I would likely be uncomfortable with this sort of invasion into my personal space. Those big bushy eyebrows would be enough to scare the bejesus out of me and send me turning around in the other direction. We made it past the sentry and were seated after having to wait a short while. Our server was pleasant enough and took our order quickly for our drinks, appetizers and lunch. The drinks came right away but the appetizer failed to materialize until a different (?) server returned with our meals about 20 minutes later and voila! there it was. My associate asked why the appetizer wasn't brought out BEFORE the meals to which we were given a blank stare and a flustered motion of "I'll be right back." OUR server returned to our table about 5 minutes later and apologized for the poor timing of the delivery. Apparently there was a large party upstairs that was taking priority over all the other customers and things got a little hectic and crazy therefore some of the servers had to jump in to assist with them. Not what we wished to hear. I have no idea where the manager / owner was while this was going on but my first and only experience with this restaurant will be my last. As for the food, it was oversalted and lacked true Greek flavor. Can't say I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Best Greek EVER!

Whomever says that this restaurant has no atmosphere is completely wrong!!! The owner of the restaurant greets everyone with a big hug as if you were an old friend and the staff is always on top of it. If I can recommend something, it is the gyro salad. It is by far, the best salad you will ever have!! I've been going to this place for years now, sometimes a few times a month for lunch, and it is always amazing! If you have trouble finding parking, just go to the parking garage behind.

Generic food, no atmosphere,

In for the afternoon to attend a convention downtown and was recommended to this place on Pine. After waiiting way too long to be seated (it was lunchtime) , I had to wait equally as long to be served (and I was by myself!). Once served , the food was very bland and generic and not at all worth my wait or the money spent. Maybe they were having an off day, but why did it have to be on my one and now only, visit to this town? Would NOT recommend.
