Considering south Orange County (especially the posh confines of Laguna Niguel) is pretty reserved when it comes to gritty establishments like biker bars, it's amazing that the Mugs Away Saloon has thrived as long as it has. A perennial favorite with the motorcycle set as well as non-riding enthusiasts, Mugs Away has been the premier roadhouse in south OC since the '70s. Offering nothing more than basics such as domestic beer, bar nosh and salty snacks, this little bar is as close to classic Americana as it gets. Weekdays are slow with the occasional blue-collar crowd settling in for a quick beer, but weekends and most evenings are host to burly hog-riding bikers and the like. Sure, you find the odd suburban dad in khakis taking in a light beer on the patio overlooking the Laguna knolls, but for every pair of Dockers, there are at least five leather vests. By the way, if you're in the area on the second Saturday of July, stop by the Saloon -- an event that started in 1979 allows everyone to moon passing Amtrak trains. It's such an accepted tradition, most major news stations cover the occasion.
