Keep the boardwalks, amusements and louder-than-loud beachfront bars that pepper the Jersey Shore. For a true beach experience, with rolling sand dunes, wide strips of white sand and the sounds of the waves echoing in your ears, you need travel no farther than Sandy Hook. Part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, which is intended to preserve open space all around New York Harbor, Sandy Hook offers six and a half miles of sandy beaches and a wide array of facilities. As an added bonus for those who hate tan lines, the Gunnison Beach section of the park is an officially sanctioned clothing-optional beach -- it's the largest on the Atlantic coast. Warning signs are posted, so you're not likely to stumble onto a nude volleyball game accidentally. The only downside to Sandy Hook is its popularity. Among the northernmost bits of the Jersey Shore, the beach can get packed on weekends with an amazing cross-section of sun worshippers.

The Best Beach Ever
By Foghorn210 on 07/14/2008
I love this beach. I am more comfortable there than any other beach. I have never seen anyone out of line. People were friendly and helpful more so than in Staten Island where I live. I would just go to grab a few rays for an hour or two and be bothered by morons, People at Gunnison have even helped carry my beach chair and not because they wanted to try to hit on me (they were with a wife or girlfriend). They were just friendly and giving a helping hand. No one stares at anyone else and I have never felt better about my own body.

A Great Place to Go

I found it to be a very relaxing way to enjoy nature and all the people. To those who will "never go again" good for you.

Too Many Gay Men at this beach
By spyvsspy01 on 09/12/2007
If you are not gay, then this beach is not for you. The gay men and some of the straight men, there are just way out of line. If you are a single woman, or with another women, these low life men insist on bothering you. With endless, talk, of just plain old garbage. Also the guys insist on placing there cocks as close to you as they can. I will never go back

Best beach in Jersey. Leave the bathing suit at home.
