Back in the day, the Fastlane easily competed with New York nightclubs as far as drawing top- notch indie acts was concerned. After opening in 1974, most Jersey acts stopped in, and it wasn't odd to catch the likes of REM or U2 there by the mid-'80s, staying the need, as we have currently, to drive to the Big Apple to catch acts at similar points in their careers. Hopefully, the re-opening of this spacious but still intimate club will include the return of such quality booking. For the time being, the Fastlane plans to schedule local acts and then begin to pepper the proceedings with acts of more national renown or at least of some indie buzz. We'll see. Asbury Park, in general, has a long way to go before recapturing the days when the summer meant not only Bruce at the Stone Pony but the Ramones at the Fastlane. -- Andy Fenwick
