Soon after the opening of wd-50, The New York Times was forced to correct a misprint in an article describing a dish of "tiger nuts with Thai peppercorns." Turns out it was poached kumquats with star anise and Thai peppercorns, not tiger nuts. Wylie Dufresne, the wunderkind behind 71 Clinton Fresh Food, is known as a bold meticulous chef with a taste for unusual pairings and robust flavor. He's also brave enough to have opened a restaurant without offering a green salad and still enough of the enfant terrible to dispense with excess menu verbiage describing how a dish is cooked. The space is cool and casual, and boasts a copper fireplace, bamboo floors and exposed beams -- quite a transformation from the bodega that once occupied the spot. The front bar is itself small, but there's plenty of room for crowds to pile in three-deep. Expect frequent seasonal menu adjustments from Dufresne, who rose to fame at 71 Clinton by preparing dishes from the freshest fish, meats and produce available. -- Adam Mazmanian

good... but not great

we decided to have our anniversary dinner at wd-50 this weekend. after reading rave reviews in several places, we were expecting a lot more. the ambience is nice... the staff is friendly... the food was good, but not great. at that price point, we were expecting a lot more (taste-wise and portion-size).
