Rate and Write a Review This West Village hotspot is considered the first NYC gastro-pub, a traditional British bar that serves high quality food. Despite high-profile owners (amongst them Mario Batali, a record exec and a UK chef), the atmosphere is still decidedly low-profile, with two comfortable rooms, a long bar, exposed brick and tin ceilings. The menu is described as seasonal British and Italian, which translates as: Goodbye meatloaf and haggis, hello sheep's-milk ricotta gnudi, Jerusalem artichoke salad and sauteed calf's liver. A British Invasion always seems to take something familiarly American and make it fresh again: so goes the popular burger, char-grilled and thick, with Roquefort cheese. Recent renovations saw the addition of another bar and restaurant upstairs. It's usually busy, so plan ahead or learn the secret handshake.
