The city's tiny taquerias, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, are inexpensive and generally serve the most authentic regional cuisine. On most nights, especially weekends, the tables at Taqueria y Fonda get packed with people pining for Southwestern Mexican food in a no-nonsense environment to the backbeat of a Spanish jukebox. Snack on the homemade nachos brought to your table and sip Mexican beer to start. Then skip the burritos and go straight for dishes like chicken chile ajo or chicken with pumpkin seed sauce and cilantro. The deep fried taco dorados are also delightful, and can be stuffed with a usual suspect like carnitas or something more subversive like oreja (pork ear), tripa (tripe) and sesos (beef brains). With cheap prices and a super casual atmosphere, it's a magnet for both nearby students (Columbia, Fordham) and downtowners sick of the same old Burritoville thing.

Best authentic Mexican in the city, great friendly staff and surprise - a spaghetti, avacato and jalapeños too die for. This is the real deal

Great food, hole in the wall
By kaimandante on 09/04/2007
I worked a block away from this place for 2 years. I never knew where it was but one day a coworker was eating a grilled tilapia and let me taste it...wow! I was hooked. We ordered from there regularly, but I had never set foot inside the place. The day I did, I was shocked. Shocked at how ugly and run down the place looked. I mean the ceiling and 'decorations' were ragged and dingy. Everything seemed like it had been through a war. But the food. The food is undeniable. From the burritos, to the fish to the chicken salad, which I just finished eating, is delicious. No wonder this place is packed with folks even at 2:00 in the morning. I was not surprised to see they won the aol city's best award. They've got great food. NOw if we could just get an interior designer in there...

I lived nearby for 4 years, and ate at La Fonda at least once a week. I had just moved from San Francisco and was grieving the loss of mexican food and then this place opened. Jorge is a genius, and he loves food. And it shows. Every time. The tacos are awesome, (carnitas especially) and huge and cheap. Go. Sorry about your diet.
