Some locations are just made for impromptu visits. Before tapas bar Tapeo 29 opened on this quaint yet busy corner, its space was the office of Dr. Dave, whose locally famous walk-in clinic looked like an urban MASH post. The doc has moved on, but people still come in spontaneous droves, drawn by the smell of sizzling garlic shrimp that owners Ofir and Rinat Yaloz have nicknamed the "perfume of Tapeo 29." French doors and large shuttered windows draw in the breeze and the early evening light. Passersby stop to enjoy a glass of wine along with pickled olives or cilantro-scented meatballs, but end up staying until they're full. The artisanal cheeses and cured meat are imported from Spain, as are all ingredients except the local produce. Ofir says the only bit of old-world authenticity missing is the refuse that Spaniards tend to chuck on the floor. Thats probably because Manhattanites are too busy licking their fingers.

The best Tapas in the city
By lucky2803 on 06/29/2005
We had the best time ever, the place looks absolutely amazing, very very nice and one of a kind in the city. All the windows are open on hot days and a cool breeze with the amazing sangria is hitting the nail right on the head. The staff is great and very helpful with the large selection of wine and the food matching. (Very hot bartenders) Light soft Flamenco and Spanish music made us feel right in Spain, great atmosphere. Sitting on the bar is a must Bottom-line, this place is great.

Noisy
By chet5 on 06/18/2005
This small sort of okay little nibbles spot ends up being another annoying LES spot for Bus and Tunnel loudmouths to gather and try to look sophisticated. The wine was fine and the meager eats edible but the worst part is that they keep the wall doors wide open so all these loud kids come up from the side walk! it's really an annoying place. Later on when I went home just across the street the screaming kids kept me awake. Yet another idiot place on the LES for clone 20 somethings, eager to be edgy gather to be seen. The least the management could do is shut the wall doors so everyone doesn't have to hear it. You really have to wonder how much the owners are paying off the cops.
