Sam Hazen's pan-Asian palace, the former art-house Plaza Theater, is a massive, 12,000 foot multi-level Zen temple with a big Buddha statue directing traffic around a reflecting pool. The mood, lighting and warm decor can't compete with the star wattage here, though -- just ask regulars like Derek Jeter and his entourage. But make no mistake: Tao's cuisine is serious. Chinese and Japanese influences can be found all over the menu, with supporting roles played by Korean and Thai accents. The wok-seared sirloin is exquisite, as is the oolong tea-smoked salmon, Peking duck, and well-portioned sushi. Elegant, romantic and star-studded, Tao has few equals.

The cheers bar of NY?
By Thmpsndawn469 on 05/28/2008
Years ago, if the truth be known. It was a great place to go. Carrie, from the T.V. show "Sex and the City". Did find it! And from that time on, Tao "rode the back"? of it. The cheifs all left. And they where replaced by street vendors? To the owners "shame on you". For well you already know.

Terrible, arrogant, service
By raphaelmeh on 12/27/2006
Made reservations three days in advance for 10:15PM. Arrived at 9:45 and was still waiting at 10:45. This happens in busy restaurants but the lady who claimed to be the Maitre'd was the most arrogant, unpleasant and confrontational person I have encountered in a service oriented business. After much argument, we decided a dinner is not worth the aggrevation.
