Cupcakes can cure anything and spread a little sugar-sweet sunshine around the world -- or at least to the Lower East Side, where this charming bakery dispenses dose after tasty dose until late into the night. Brace yourself for a hit parade: pistachio cake, coconut with meringue, banana pudding with vanilla wafers and, of course, dozens of cupcakes, each with a bouffant of colored butter-cream icing and a touch of crunchy sprinkles. Even though the pedigree here can be traced back to Magnolia Bakery -- both revel in '50s-style comfort-laden desserts -- the flavors at Sugar Sweet Sunshine are noticeably different. And unlike Magnolia, there are tables where you can immediately devour the goods with coffee or milk instead of snacking with sticky fingers all the way home. Either way, it's an impossible feat to leave this retro haven without a smile on your face.
