In an area rich in mediocre Italian cuisine, Spigolo (Italian for "corner") takes the Upper East Side by storm, armed with three Union Square Cafe veterans. Husband and wife team Scott and Heather Fratangelo branch out here as executive chef and pastry chef, respectively, and insert their creative energies into the cuisine. Seafood encompasses most of the menu, from the salmon tartare with sun-dried tomato crudo to the braised octopus crostini and baked little neck clams with bagna cauda butter antipasti. This lighter fare leaves room for the heartier secondi like breast of veal with pancetta and braised escarole and roasted monkfish medallions served up with broccoli rabe, fennel sausage and Manila clams in white wine. And late-night denizens are in luck: Spigolo coverts to a wine bar after bedtime, serving assorted bruschettas and affettati with a variety of Italian wines offered by the glass.
