Jean-Georges Vongerichten plans on taking over the world. Maybe not all by himself, not all at once, but it will happen. The world-renowned, wildly inventive chef is like one of those avalanche snowballs rolling downhill: It gains speed, gets bigger and you know that there's a big bang coming. That hill is New York City and the "big bang" is his new Asian-cuisine hot spot, Spice Market. Simmering in a sprawling, 12,000-foot, century-old warehouse in the Meatpacking District, Spice Market plays up the elements that have made his global Vong a hit: essence of the Orient in light spices, dozens of herbs, fruit scents and vegetable broths. And even though he's blanketed the city (his other ventures include Jean Georges, 66 and JoJo) with haute French and Asian flavor, he still needs the help of Gray Kunz and Phil Suarez to secure Chelsea's heart. But don't worry: Although Kunz, formerly of Lespinasse, is Swiss, he grew up in Southeast Asia. And along with Vong's sidekick Stanley Wong, they know their way around a bouillabaisse.

Groovy food sucky service
By Francislobo5 on 04/29/2008
The restaurant decor was fabulous... The food was almost as good.. The service was standard.. SO, on the whole, a pretty good evening.... UNTIL.. when I asked for the lady at the entrance if I could make another reservation.. I was rudely told to call the next day.. Her attitude and abruptness completely left a sour taste in my mouth.. A perfectly good evening.. but a sad ending..

Style over substance

Great decor. Great people-watching, both in the restaurant and on the street. Service and food were unacceptable. Beef Skewer was served raw, which I did not realize until I had taken a few bites. They replaced the dish, but by then it was too late -- it made me violently ill a few hours later. Or maybe the kitchen took revenge for me sending it back. The Halibut was okay. The waiter apparently went off duty after I was served and I was abandoned by the waitstaff.

Poor Service
By docandyk on 07/21/2007
I ate at the Spice Market last evening with a gorup of 6. My entree came out 20 minutes after everyone elses without a bit of information or concern from the wait staff. I was so angry, I sent it back and left without having dinner. While the food is OK, this kind of service in unconcionable in a restaurant of this stature and reputation.
