Sette, with its warm amber lighting, high ceilings, and combination of rustic and subtly modern decor, has a supremely relaxing atmosphere and casual civility reflective of gentrified Park Slope. Hearty southern Italian dishes are prepared in an open kitchen, with a smoky aroma emanating from the wood fire visible in the brick oven. That oven sees a lot of action, used to make pizette, baked sardines with herbed breadcrumbs and lemon, and the oven-roasted fish of the day, which is usually orata or other white-fleshed Mediterranean fish. It is a setting for all moods, and neighborhood folks come for romantic dinners at butcher block tables with candlelight, or make a casual stop in the spacious and tree-ringed sidewalk cafe for appetizers like bigne - fritters with Parmesan, flecks of ham, and pine nuts, or desserts like the wood-oven baked seasonal fruit crostata. And the affordable wine list and availability of quartinos makes it easy to try something different each visit.
