One of the major qualities that distinguished diners notice about Sapphire, an upscale Indian restaurant near Lincoln Center, is its attention to wine. Unlike Tabla, Dawat and the cheaper downtown versions on Indian Row (which are usually BYOB), this opulent eatery with traditional silk-and-wood panels offers not only a lengthy list but a sommelier to guide you through it. The cuisine is regional from Goa, with slight alterations to appeal to American tastes. Anchored by the tandoor oven, the extensive and varied menu includes everything from chicken dhansak and lamb vindaloo, to shrimp amotik in varying degrees of spiciness. All the usual suspects are here, including cumin, lentils, yogurt sauce, basmati and the popular garlic naan bread. Like its namesake stone, Sapphire is an exotic and elegant option for those who yearn for a sparkling night out.

Rude waiters.
By elsnoopy9 on 01/25/2006
The waiters in this place literally sneered at me when I asked for tamarind when they brought the papadum. Ridiculous. Food is decent, but overpriced. Brick Lane on 6th st is by far the best Indian food in the city. I'll takes my $1,000 a year in Indian food business there.
