With its beautifully designed, warm-ambient locations on the Upper East and West Sides, Rosa Mexicano reminds fine diners to take a short trip south of the border for authentic Mexican cuisine. The First Avenue location, open since 1984, is a more traditional tortilla temple, immediately evident by the Amate gods greeting you at the gates and papel picados hanging from the ceiling. The West Side version is a newer and more stylish take on old-world Aztec charm, highlighted by a mysterious and attractive first-floor bar, a 30-foot cascading waterfall and floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering a romantic view of nearby Lincoln Center. Culinary director Roberto Santibanez keeps the menus similar: Start with a signature frozen pomegranate margarita and some glorious tableside-made guacamole en Molcajete. Try a bit of the ceviche de dorado (marinated mahi-mahi) appetizer, but save room for the succulent salmon al guajillo with mashed boniatos, or the puerco an Manchamanteles (grilled achiote marinated double-cut pork chops with Manchamanteles sauce and mashed sweet potatoes), which are both a godsend. -- Yon Motskin

I continue to be baffled!
By dfred212 on 03/27/2006
By the raves Rosa Mexicana receives year after year. It is mediocre at best. I ordered Pechugas de Pollo and the much celebrated guacamole. When I asked for tortillas they looked confused and later brought out what looked like silver-dollar pancakes - same size and thickness. The guac. was decent, the chicken okay, and they had the nerve to charge an exorbitant price for the three "tortillas". I lived in Texas for 20 years, I know TexMex, I know Mexican and this isn't it!

Best taste north of Mexico
By mayavase on 11/11/2005
This is by far the best Mexican food around. None of the phoney yellow rice and soupy pink beans. Sure, they do a take to make it appeal to our tastes, but it's still better than anything I've had, next in line, Mi Cocina and their Taco offshoot on Greenwich Ave.

best mexican in nyc
By geoffnyc on 03/03/2005
i have the wonderful luck of living next door to this addictive restaurant. on the rare occasion that i can entertain an entree after the filling guacamole that satisfies so well... a basic mexican fare achieves. go for the guacamole and pomegranite margaritas, a marriage made in heaven (can somebody translate this into spanish?)
