This 12-table Italian restaurant on secluded Cornelia St. in the West Village is where Mario Batali, of Babbo fame, made his mark on the NYC dining scene. His garlicky white-bean bruschetta and pappardelle with meltingly tender ragu put him among the ranks of the best chefs of the city, and Po's financial and critical success made him a hot commodity. When he left to pursue his television career and open other restaurants, his original partner bought him out and runs the place pretty much as it always has been, menu and all. The small, bright quarters lend a simple, homey air. If you're alone, you can plop down at the glossy wood bar to eat without a reservation (they are hard to come by). Po's tasting menu is much lauded and probably the most reasonably priced way to taste the recipes that launched the career of a food superstar. -- Erin Franzman

Romantic Italian in the West Village
By serio1313 on 03/12/2005
Villagers, Foodies and tourists alike crowd this small, yet comfortable spot on charming Cornelia. Po, even without Mario, still thrives. The northern Italian fare is superb, and the service is attentive but not intrusive. Great place for a romantic date for two, but familes and groups of friends can be comfortable here too. The pasta dishes are always fresh and well prepared, and the prices are moderately priced. Food of this quality elsewhere in the city will cost you much more. In the nice weather, there are a couple of outdoor tables available. A warm spring night, a great meal with someone you care about, outdoors between Bleecker and w 4th. What more can you ask for?

Feels Like Home

My husband and I lunch here about once a month.

The food is delicious and just so satisfying.

Staff knows us and treats us accordingly.

One lunch dish which is delicious is the guinea hen with whole grains... absolutely delicious. Very reasonable and good wines by the glass.

Feels like home; can hardly wait to return.

A taste of heaven on earth

Italian with a twist. All dishes are fabulous. Classy, but not stuffy. The focus is on food and ambience. Friendly service with a smile and a wink A bit pricey, but not over the top. The food is worth it. Average cost of entree is $20, but there are pasta dishes for much less. 5x/week A bottle of fine wine and a roasted bird in cream sauce
