Though other, newer Greek eateries have garnered more attention in recent years, Periyali remains a consistent favorite among foodies and Greek entrepreneurs. Several small rooms make up the dining room, each attractive and simple with white walls, tiled floor, dark beams and a tented ceiling of billowing white clothe. Many of the dishes have Greek names but translate into straightforward charcoal-grilled items, such as the grilled octopus and rosemary-scented lamb chops. Other favorites: the spanikopita, the grilled whole sea bass doused with good olive oil, the hearty moussaka and even sweetbreads served with large white beans; and, for dessert, the rice pudding. The wine list features a page of Greek wines-which are becoming more popular-along with a satisfying selection of French, Italian and American offerings.
