The backstory is as sweet as the storefront treats at this small and charming cafe off of Smith Street. It began life as a teeny tiny cookie company in the young owner's West Village apartment. As her customers grew (Dean and Deluca are wholesale buyers), she hired a baker, who eventually became her husband. Though much of the business is still catering and delivery (weddings and holiday parties are big business), this cute, bluish space is where the love crystallizes. As small as a gumball but with taste large as heartache, the cookies are crafted in three kinds: classics, biscotti and special. Each of them are named after a girl -- Lucia is shortbread, caramel and chocolate layer, Penelope is filled with apricot and covered in chopped nuts, and Eleanor is two buttery almond wafers filled with dulce de leche. There are a few other waist-wideners, like brownies and lemon bars, as well as espressos and teas. Finally, there's a place where leaving with as many different girls as possible is encouraged.
