Unlike most places with relatives touted in their names, Mama's actually has one. And even though none of the staff in this small East Village institution are related, they seem like a family, from the cooks to the delivery people, who are undoubtedly the most colorful and personable delivery staff in the 'hood. The owner, Michael (Mama) opened this location in 1995, when restaurant choices near Avenue B were scant. "I live around here, and I saw it almost as a service to the community. I wanted a place where you could get big portions of fresh food for not much money, not frozen patties for eight bucks." Paintings of motherly types adorn the walls of the tiny, casual space, and outdoor dining is done with fold-down school desks. Two perennial favorites are fried chicken and mac and cheese, with the mashed potatoes coming in at a close third. And the vegetable selections are excellent -- it's perhaps the only place where people rave about the brussels sprouts. -- Dan Glass

Mama Mia!

Honestly, the best food I've had in a long time. The portions are huge for very little $... however I would be big $$$$ any day to eat Mama's food. It's AWESOME.

Get Over It, THE BEST!
By mimiimfurst on 03/15/2007
Get over your concept of perfect presentation and piping hot 2 seconds out of the oven ideals. Mama's bosts the best home-style cookin in NYC. Expect to share a table with a stranger and throw your meal in their microwave for 45 seconds before chowing down on pure heaven. HUGE proportions and mouth watering food! If you cant deal with reheating your food, then move on. It's the best!

Very disappointed
By joebear11229 on 08/31/2006
Usually AOL is on the money when they rate something as the city's best. They are way off here. The food is cold and poorly presented. You can tell from the taste that if they would simply keep it hot it would be much better. They do have a self service microwave to heat things but who wants food in the microwave. The desert was tasty but it was also poorly slopped onto a plate. One would never guess it was pie. On a positive note the food is very cheap and they give you a ton. However, I would rather pay a little more for hotter food and better presentation
